Obituary of Sofia M. Alfaro
Please share a memory of Sofia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce our beloved Mother and friend Sofia M. Alfaro passed quietly at home surrounded by her children and grandson on Monday, July 27, 2020.
Born Martha Sofia Esperanza Cubillas Chacon in her native land of Lima, Perú, she lived a beautiful life that took her around the world numerous times.
She was the loving daughter of the late Bernarda Chacon and Juan Cubillas; dear wife of the late Victor Alfaro; beautiful, loved, and exemplary mother to Lenin, Ivan, Katiuska, and Vladimir; loving “Abuelita” to Jeannie, Erika, Tiffany-Ann, Ana, Daniela, Karina, Christian, Stephen, and Nuria; and dear Great Grandmother to Aitana, Audrey, Marissa, and Carla.
Beginning her career by developing software for IBM, she would go on to work her way up the ladder at Faucett Airlines, where she flew to dozens of countries (and filled up many passports) before coming to the United States to work in Nassau County for Senior Affairs. In her later years she was a resident at St. Hedwig’s Gardens, where she made ceramic crafts and played the other residents in cards and various games, sometimes even for money.
While she was pleased with her accomplishments and recognition in the workplace, she was most proud of the family she had, spending free time knitting and crocheting baby outfits and sweaters for those closest to her. As she enters heaven to watch over us, we will remember her not only for her love and kindness, but for her dedication to others through the Catholic faith, an important constant throughout her life. Surely, Heaven will be opening a dance floor, as she had mastered everything from the sharp steps of the Tango, to the graceful and courtship dance of the Marineras, to the majestic Waltz of the Valses Criollos, all without skipping a beat.
A wake will be held on Saturday August 1st between 3pm and 7pm at Weigand Bros. Funeral Home, located at 49 Hillside Avenue - Williston Park, NY 11596 (516) 746-4484.
Please note that a virtual viewing will also be available on this day. Information for the virtual viewing will be posted on this bulletin board on Friday July 31st.
