Sheila Noreen Pelan of New Hyde Park journeyed home on Jan 31,2023. Sheila was born in Flushing NY to her loving parents Patrick Melia and Mary Melia nee Rogers. She was raised in Bay Ridge Brooklyn with her brothers Patrick and James. Sheila shared her life and undying love with her beloved husband John for over 60 years. They loved dancing the Lindy, skiing, playing Scrabble, traveling, going to the beach and being with family and friends. Through her tenacity and determination Sheila was able to earn her Masters Degree from Fordham University and Honorary Doctorate from St. Joseph’s University while raising her 8 children John, Bridget, Stephen, Darren, Jerry, Jimmy, Barney and Colette. One her greatest joy was celebrating the love she had for her family. Her 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren were all made to feel special in her company. Her family sought her gentle council and wisdom knowing that she would inspire and guide them to making the best decision. Sheila loved her family in Ireland dearly. They too celebrated her grace, dignity and gentleness. Sheila found God in all situations and invited others to do the same. She was kind and forgiving and selfless. Sheila’s passionate vocation was in service to families in need and homeless children. Through Angel Guardian Home Sheila worked tirelessly for 49 years as a social worker and then Director. Her integrity, gentle manner and compassion served as motivation for those who worked beside her. She was an active parishioner for over 50 years at Notre Dame Church serving the community on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. Sheila loved to dance, shop, read and most of all to be with the children. She lived a love filled life. Sheila has gone home in peace to be with her devoted husband John and beloved son Jimmy as well as family, friends and ancestors who have crossed before her. May Sheila’s legacy continue by the good deeds, kind words and loving compassion we share in her name.
