Obituary of Betty Jane Altoonian

Betty Jane Altoonian, age 90, of Roslyn Heights, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Betty Jane (Herbine) was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on July 26, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Mabel. Betty is preceded in death by her older siblings Edgar, Howard, Charles, Evelyn, and Walter.

Betty was lovingly raised by Charles and Emma in The Bronx where she became the woman we all came to love and adore. Betty talked frequently about her life growing up in a cold water flat, her New York City adventures, and the friendships she formed early on that would last a lifetime with a group of ladies known as “The BAIT Girls”.

Out of all the things Betty talked about, she  always came back to the love of her life, Jack Altoonian. Betty is the beloved wife of the late Jack whom she met in her teenage years. While Jack was in the service, they wrote love letters that proved their love for one another could only grow in time and it most certainly did. Betty and Jack wed on February 27, 1954, and eventually raised two children. Betty is survived by her two sons, Mark (Christina) and John (Dina), and her six grandchildren, Daniel (Deborah), Kayla, Courtney, Matthew, Caroline, and Julia. Betty loved her husband, children, and grandchildren beyond measure.

If you were lucky enough to spend time with Betty over the years, there is a very good chance you had the pleasure of watching Jeopardy, discussing Dancing with the Stars, finishing her crossword puzzles, and going to church with her.

Betty will truly be missed. May she forever rest in peace with the love of her life, Jack.
