Obituary of John J. Sweeney

John “Jack” Joseph Sweeney, Sr., passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the age of 95. Jack was born in Glendale, Queens, and is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Elinor (née Buggy), and siblings, Fr. Edward J. Sweeney, S.J., Billy, and Elinor Connors. A beloved husband and wonderful father, Jack was married to Margaret (née Coady) for 69 years. They raised 8 children: Margaret Flanagan (Edward), Kathleen Broschart, Jack, Jr. (Sheila), Maryellen Polizzi, Daniel (Bettina), Kevin, Maureen Bodo (Peter), and Edward (Elizabeth). As “Pop,” he adored his 17 grandchildren: Kenny, Tamara, Melissa, Kevin, Brian, Nicole, Annie, Courtney, Shannon, Anthony, Jack, Peter, Erin, Katie, Gabriella, Patrick, Dylan, and 18 great-grandchildren: Lyla, Jack, Sean, Nora, Henry, Luca, Castalia, Polly-Quinn, Riley, Hailey, Nash, Hadley, Kase, Myles, Gavin, Sloan, Ezra, Zeke.

Jack served 37 years for the FDNY after his time as a Marine during the Korean War. A man with a gift for making connections wherever he went, he was known endearingly as “Pally” and “Bag-A-Rags.” He will be dearly missed and well-remembered.

Family will receive friends at Weigand Brothers Funeral Home on Monday, August 26, 2-5pm and 7-9pm, 49 Hillside Ave, Williston Park, NY 11596. Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of St. Aidan, where Jack had been a parishioner for 66 years, at 10am on Tuesday, August 27, 505 Willis Ave, Williston Park, NY 11596.
