Obituary of Vincent J. La Sala

Vincent J. La Sala of Williston Park, New York, on October 10, 2012. Proud and devoted husband (nee: Carol Tricomi/deceased), and beloved father of four daughters, Carolann (Jack Sherman, M.D.), Vanessa (Michael Rofsky), Linda (Joseph Crapotta, M.D.) and Laurie (Christopher Longman). "Poppy Vinny" was loved and adored by his nine grandchildren (Lisa, Gina, Daniel, Jason, Christopher, Joseph, Laura, Nicholas and Michael) and 3 great-grandchildren (Isabella, Anthony and Gabriella). La Sala was a lifelong educator and child advocate. He began his career in education as a secondary science teacher and guidance counselor. La Sala was a Nassau BOCES Executive Administrator from 1972 until 1991 and was instrumental in establishing and highlighting BOCES as a vital resource entity for public educational services. He was the first recipient of their "Partners in Education Award." La Sala served on Governor Mario Cuomo's Job Training Council as Long Island's and New York State's appointed representative for the enhancement of children's academic and vocational educational experiences and related job training. A resident of the Herricks community for more than 50 years, La Sala served as a Herricks school board trustee and President for 15 years, from 1969 to 1984. La Sala was President of the Williston Park Village Library Board. He and wife, Carol, were active in many school and community organizations. La Sala gave countless years of service to the Herricks Human Relations Forum, Rotary of the Willistons, Knights of Columbus Cellini Lodge, Gift of Life, St. John's University Alumni, the American Cancer Society and St. Aidan's Parish. Both La Sala and his wife were Extraordinary Ministers at St. Aidan's, where he was also President of the Holy Name Society for many years. Known for his good humor and gregarious nature, La Sala earned a reputation as an intelligent and compassionate individual dedicated to enhancing children's self-esteem and encouraging children to reach their full potential. He was a strong public schools and community advocate. La Sala was always available to help those in need, and would continue throughout his life to assist in job placements, counseling and education-related special services. In retirement, and following the death of his wife in 2003, La Sala most enjoyed being surrounded by his family. "Vinny" was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 9, 1934, a day which he proudly reminded his family on each of his birthdays still holds the record as the coldest day recorded in New York. He was the youngest child of Joseph and Mary La Sala. He married his wife, Carol, in 1956, following their graduation from St. John's University, and then settled in Astoria, Queens. La Sala was a detail man for Schering and Hoffman-La Roche pharmaceuticals before becoming an educator. In 1962 the young couple moved to Williston Park, New York. La Sala then earned a Masters Degree from Hofstra University. The La Sala household was always an active and welcoming place. The La Salas were known for their warm and compassionate spirit. La Sala is also survived by his brother, Gaspar La Sala (Constance), of New Hyde Park, New York, sister, Christine Romeo (John Romeo/deceased), of Peekskill, New York, and brother-in-law Joseph Tricomi of Boynton Beach, Florida. He was loved by many nieces and nephews. Wake will be held Friday, October 12, 2012 at Weigand's Funeral Home on Hillside Avenue in Williston Park, from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral Mass on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 9:45 AM, St. Aidan's Church, Willis Avenue, Williston Park, NY. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Queens.
