Obituary of Rosalind Clark

Please share a memory of Rosalind to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rosalind C. Clark, formerly of Garden City, died yesterday May 26, 2014 at the Equinox Terrace in Manchester, VT. She was a few weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. She was born unexpectedly as her family was leaving for a 4th of July picnic on July 2, 1911. Family legend had it that she was so small, they swaddled her in a cigar box and put her in the oven to keep warm. As a girl, she assisted the nuns in caring for the children in an orphanage attached to Our Lady of Sorrows school in Brooklyn. She was the valedictorian of her class. She also scored the highest grade in a diocesan religion contest for which she earned a gold piece, which was never given to her. She started work early, sewing rose-shaped pillows at a coffin factory. She proceeded to the Stadtzeiter Gesellshaft Newspaper. She crossed the river to the Woolworth Building and a publishing company where she devoured the books the management encouraged its employees to read. From the publishing company she was hired by the Bankers Trust Company. At the bank she met the love of her life, George A. Clark. They dated four years before secretly marrying. Her father would not let her marry because, in the depression, he needed her income. George's parents would not consent to their son marrying a Catholic. The marriage lasted for 72 years and produced sons Bruce and Neil, grandchildren, Rebecca, Melissa, George "Artie" and Brent, as well as great grandchildren Louise, Juliette, Paul, Allyson, Kaitlyn, Phillip, Paloma Louie Bear, Shelly, Marley, Trevor, James and Gavin. Visitation Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Weigand Bros. Funeral Home 49 Hillside Ave., Williston Park, NY. Funeral Service Friday 10:00am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
