Obituary of George F. Heerdt

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

HEERDT, George F. (Hurdy Gurdy)– 68, Retired FDNY - 911 Responder of Woodside, NY & (formerly Corona) – died after a valiant battle with Covid on February 27. Loving father of Caitlin & Anne & grand-pup Luna. Survived by his ex-wife Sheila (nee Ruddy) & sister Katherine, many cousins, nieces & nephews. Although he was retired, he was very proud to be a forever and always member of Canarsie’s Bravest Ladder 170 Engine 257. Proud member of the FDNY Steuben Society. George loved being a fireman but more than that, he loved his daughters & his family. He was a great father. He loved golfing with his buddies at Forest Park Golf Course and was thrilled to play a round in Pebble Beach, CA. He was an expert Bowler, winning many tournaments with High Average, High Game, High Series, etc. that would’ve made his Idol Earl Anthony proud! He took many a pot from the guys in his weekly Poker game and looked forward to calling his daughters the next day to announce the good news. George attended St. Leo’s School in Corona & Power Memorial High School in NYC. He won a full ride scholarship to Baruch College where he became the school DJ. On-air he was known as the “Hurdy Gurdy Man”. He loved Blues music and played a mean harmonica & tenor sax. He entertained many with his rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Jail House Rock”. He was highly intelligent, loved to read books & had many interests, especially sci-fi – movies, books, and alien sightings, etc. George was a fun-loving guy who always had a smile for everyone, and a laugh that was contagious. Not a tub of popcorn will be eaten at a movie theatre or Chinese food eaten without thinking of him. Our Dad was loved by many & will be missed by all! Life will not be the same without him, but we know that the loss of him will be lightened by the continued love and support of all his friends and family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us in the future when you think of him or have a funny story to share with us. In remembrance, we will be taking trips abroad that he wanted to go on and know that he will be sharing our experience with us in spirit. And here is one last reminder from George “Take Your Vitamins”!!!

Please join us in celebrating his life on Fri. March 5th, 2021 - 6-9:30pm at Weigands 49 Hillside Ave., Williston Park, NY (516) 746-4484 & mass Sat. 10:30 am @ St. Brigids R.C. Church 75 Post Ave., Westbury NY. Interment at later date at All Faiths Cemetery, Middle Village, NY
